Communities

Our operations are closely connected to the people and places where we work. We build trust by listening, being transparent about our impacts, and working alongside those who are closely connected to the community. By understanding local priorities and collaborating on shared goals, we help create opportunities, strengthen local economies, and support long‑term resilience beyond the life of the mine.

ON THIS PAGE

We aim to build meaningful relationships with individuals, groups, and communities by listening to their concerns, understanding their interests, and responding in a timely manner to emerging issues that may affect our operations or the well-being of those around us. Our approach is guided by our Sustainability Management System, which provides a consistent framework for engagement and performance across the organization.

We also recognize the importance of Indigenous community engagement. Some of our activities take place within or near Indigenous territories. Where relevant, we have formal agreement with Indigenous communities and have implemented procedures to support engagement, economic inclusion, and cultural conservation, while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation. These communities are central to our stakeholder engagement efforts, and we continue to build strong relationships based on mutual respect and shared value.

To assess the effectiveness of our engagement, we use tools such as the Social License to Operate Index and our grievance mechanisms. These systems help us document interactions, measure satisfaction, identify trends, and improve the quality of our responses. Site-level social performance teams play a key role in maintaining ongoing engagement and integrating community insights into decision-making.

How We Manage Stakeholder and Indigenous Engagement
  • Annual stakeholder mapping to identify and prioritize stakeholders across areas of influence
  • Regular engagement tailored to stakeholder needs and local contexts
  • Indigenous engagement processes established
  • Formal agreements with Indigenous communities near relevant sites
  • Use of listening tools such as the Social License to Operate Index
  • Grievance mechanisms to support transparency and responsiveness
  • Site-level social performance teams responsible for ongoing engagement and integration of community insights

We understand that our activities can affect communities in many ways.

As part of our SLO Index surveys, we ask community members to reflect on key indicators of procedural fairness, including whether:

  • The company listens to and respects their opinions on community issues
  • People in the community have opportunities to participate in decisions that affect them
  • The company is willing to change its practices in response to community concerns
  • The company follows through on its commitments

Our goal is to improve the procedural fairness component of the SLO Index across all sites, reinforcing our commitment to respectful, responsive, and inclusive engagement.

SLO Process

How We Manage Social Risks and Build Trust
  • Engagement guided by principles of procedural fairness and transparency
  • Listening to community needs and concerns
  • SLO Index surveys of the community to assess perceptions of fairness, trust and acceptance
  • Integration of community feedback into operational decision-making
  • Supporting local economic diversification
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in trust-building and responsiveness

We are committed to helping build healthy, resilient communities wherever we operate. Through purposeful investments focusing on areas that matter most to our host communities, we support initiatives that contribute to long-term social and economic development.

Our community investment efforts prioritize education, community health and well-being, and economic empowerment. Each site executes an annual investment plan tailored to local needs, ensuring our support is both responsive, strategic and sustainable. By aligning our contributions with community priorities and our business objectives, we aim to create shared value and lasting impact.

Education

We support learning pathways that open doors at every stage of life: from early childhood education to adult skills development. By expanding access, strengthening local institutions, and reducing barriers to meaningful learning opportunities, we help more people develop the skills and capabilities they need to succeed.

Community Health and Well-being

We invest in initiatives that strengthen access to essential health services and support active, healthy lifestyles. By working with communities and local partners, we aim to improve overall well-being, resilience, and quality of life.

Economic Empowerment

We partner with communities to grow inclusive, resilient local economies. Our investments strengthen small businesses, expand workforce opportunities, and create opportunities that support families, communities, and future generations.
